The Hoose History

It was in 1831 when Rachel Darnay purchased the property from
John Balmain that saw the start of  an exciting new future for The Hoose. Rachel was married to David Duncan and they had a son John Duncan who married Betsy Cowan and we believe Betsy was the first landlady to sell alcohol from this building as a Tavern Keeper. Betsy would have welcomed you into her warm living room where you would have been met with an open roaring fire to enjoy a pint and some good old fashioned conversation way into the early hours of the morning.

It was quite unusual for a woman to purchase a property at this time but it just goes to show that the landlords and landladies that have followed in Betsy footsteps have had big boots to fill. So whether you join us for a pint in The Auld Hoose, grab a coffee from The Hoose Hatch, celebrate a wedding in The Wee Hoose or spend a few nights in the comfort of the Holiday Hoose you will be stepping into the warmth and hospitality that Betsy created all those years ago.
